Yet another Newbie

Hi,

I am another newbie to the site and to Tri's.
I ran my first marathon in December and am looking to Tri a sprint or an Olympic in the near future.

How's it going Mike? What kind of time did you pull out in your marathon? If you can run a marathon I am sure an olympic distance tri will be nothing for ya. Have fun with it though.

Matt,

My marathon time was 4 hrs 28 min. I feel pretty good about the olympic distances except for the swim. I need to get a LOT more time in the water before I think I'll be up for longer swims. Short term goal=sprint...medium term goal=olympic.....long term goal=half ironman....pipe dream=ironman.

Sounds good, I am entering my first half marathon in May, and then later that month I am doing my first sprint triathlon. I have similar goals I would say. I want to do a few sprints this year and maybe an olympic at the end. Next year a half iron and by the time I am 30 I would like to do a full iron. I just started swimming in November and it gets better quickly. I started only being able to do 1 length at a time. Now I can do 20 in 10 minutes, which is not fast but a huge improvement. When is your first sprint? Have you started swimming?

I haven't signed up for a sprint yet. The pool is cold so I haven't started my swim training yet. I am in the process of reviving my bicycle and getting legs used to spinning again. I figure the swimming will have to wait a couple months. I don't even have a pair of goggle or a swim suit (other than baggies).

Ya, I don't have a noodle bender swimsuit either, so I just use a pair of board shorts. I think I will have to pick one up before I do my first triathlon. Well good luck with the biking, and I am sure you will do fine as your cardio must be at a pretty high level already to do a marathon. All the best.

I'll catch major crap around the house if I get a "speedo" type suit. Maybe I'll opt for the Tri shorts that work for everything. My cardio is pretty good I suppose (for a 45 yr old). The marathon was a killer. Afterwards I ended up with a heel injury that kept me from running for a month. The up side is that my running pace has picked up considerably since I got back on my feet. I find myself running a couple minutes per mile faster now. I am not doing 20 mile runs either though.

Actually finishing the marathon was a huge mental hurdle and a great motivator to do more.

The couple of bike rides I have done were in the 8-20 mile range. I was averaging aroud 15MPH. I was on my wifes mntn bike though. I am hoping to keep that pace up only at longer distances once I have my bike roadworthy.

Stay warm up there in the great white north. (it is 75 F here today)
