Just completed a Half Ironman

Hello all. My name is Jeremy and am from Pennsylvania. I am a runner turned triathlete. I recently completed a half ironman race. I completed it in 5:21 but was not satisfied with my performance due to my crappy half marathon time. Is there any advice for a new triathlete that would help with half ironmans. I am wanting to qualify for Kona but need alot of help in order to do such.

Thanks,

jeremy

If that was your time on your first one, you should be giving out advice not asking for it. Nice work, just keep doing them and you'll get better.

Nice one havent had the guts to do one this season maybe next year. Sorry havent got any advise for you but can I ask you a question? As I say i'm thinking of doing a 1/2 next year, how much more training have you put in compared to olympic distance. By the way great time.

Cheers
Julian

Sounds like you are doing fine...you may consider easing up on the bike just a bit to improve your run time...depends on what your time was for the 13.1.

Well...to answer a couple questions posted...I am 25 years old so I am in a difficult age group. The training I took for this triathlon was lots of mileage. I did alot of running (as that is my strength). upwards of 40 miles per week running without any speed work. I will do a tempo run if I felt good that day but only would do a tempo run only twice per week. As far as the other events, as I would not reccomend doing the same as i did, I did maintenence workouts twice a week for both swimming and biking. I would swim for mileage and would do sets of 4*400m in the pool. I would include some sprints of 50m at the end of the workout (before the cooldown). I would recommend getting to a lake or river as to get acquinted to fresh water.

As for the bike, I biked twice per week doing a long bike ride on the weekends and a shorter ride during the week. I would reccomend biking considerably more frequent than I have because I used most of my effort on the bike and suffered on the run. I guess the key there is to be able to bike easily for 70 miles on a normal ride so that you are able to conserve some energy for the run.

I modified my training off of the book "the triathlete's training bible". It is an excellent resource for how to train right for each event. I actually use it for my running training as well because it forces the reader to actively schedule their own training plan to fit their lifestyle and goals.
