Newbie looking for ideas

Hey all!!!

Just wanted to say hi. I'm new to this forum stuff and also new to triathlons. I'm a 28-year-old female from South Dakota. I'm a high school teacher with my summers "off". I try to work out 6 days a week with running, biking, and strength training. One of my workout buddies just informed me of a triathlon coming up in about 5 weeks. I would like to train to do something like that. I am currently able to run about 3 miles or more and I use the stationary bike, but have no problem going for 30-45 minutes. I'm a pretty good swimmer, but I don't have good facilities here so I haven't swam for awhile. I'm looking for some training tips to get into shape to finish a sprint triathlon. I know that I have to swim 0.4 miles, bike 12 miles, and run 3.5 miles. Any input as to training and nutrition would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jen, the first thing I would suggest is that you start to put multiple workouts together just like you would see in the sprint. This can be hard if your pool, lake, pond, ocean, or whatever you can find to swim in is either far from home or closed during you optimal training time. It sounds like you are fit enough to finish a sprint in good time and have fun doing it, you should taper off a week prior to the race and you can check out nutrition info on this site. Another tip is to try to find out where the race course is and practice on it or some where equal or just a bit harder, this will make your race day seem easy compared to your training.
Good luck on the race and let us know how it went.
Spike.

Hey I can't say I'm really qualified to give advice but I just did my first tri last Saturday and it was a blast. I'd trained for a half marathon which I completed in the worlds slowest time! So I figured a tri couldn't be any harder. I'm 42 with 3 kids and hadn't swum in years (seriously) . I just want to say GoFor It! and make sure you really hydrate during the bike and run. Everyone was very encouraging and supportive, I've already signed up for one more this season and plan on a lot more training on the bike. Have fun Celia
