Roadie looking to make leap to tri

Hello everyone,

I have been riding centuries for years and as part of my cross-training I have been running. I have never done a tri, but recently hired a swim coach. If I don't drown, I'm hoping to compete in my first tri (sprint distance) in three months. I'm in my late thirties, but the hardest thing is trying to find the time - I'm in the Army and frequently work 12-15 hour days. Very hard to find the energy when you've been on your feet all day.

Hello, you seem more ahead than myself. I am only running 25 to 30 miles a week. I need some information on how to train for a tri. If you have any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated.

Just joined the forum myself. I've done about 25 or 30 international distance tri's. I'm no tri-maniac but for a quick tip to crazylegs, swim when it's dark and ride or run when it's light outside. That's what I used to do during the off months. I've since hung it up. One thing I did was join a Master's swim program. Depending on where you live, there may be one. It's a great way to get faster and to actually make swim training more fun. Lots of interval work is usually the way to get started. Sounds like you're on your way with the cycling. Can't help you much with the run, I suck at running.

Thanks for the advice. I've really had to refine my time management skills lately. What I now do is run for time instead of distance in the mornings, swim on my lunch breaks and on the weekends, and if time permits bike in the evening. It is usually dark (but is getting lighter) when I get home, so I upgraded my indoor trainer to a quieter Blackburn fluid trainer. This way I can cycle in the living room and at the same time spend time with my family (they can talk to me without interupting my spinning). Still, I always seem to run out of time before I want to end my workouts. I am still an anchor in the pool. It looked so easy during the olympics, but I have found a new respect for swimmers. I really have to exagerate my head position (almost looking at my feet) in order to keep my lower body near the surface. I still lose a lot of momentum when I breath. I read as much as I can but reading is easier than doing. I am determined, and I am confident all I need is more practice. I appreciate any advice or suggestions from anyone who is willing to give it.
