oldie newbie

Hi....just found this site, I,ve been meaning to do a tri for years.....I,ve done all the disciplines but not all at once.....Have decided to target the Mount Maunganui half Tri next January. My swimming is the weak link as is most people by the sound of it.
Is there a great difference between pool training and open water?
Nice to see you all
John

Hey cjw, welcome to Triweek!
With your experience in all three sports, you should have no trouble making the transition...pun intended! Really, that is the one thing that will be a shock for you, so spend some time specifically working on it, both physically and logistically.
And yes, there can be a significant difference between pool training and open water. If you've been in a pool with a lot of people making waves, you know what choppy water can feel like. But in a lake, you still have to find your way amidst all of the arms and legs around you (and no line underneath you!), factor in drafting, maybe temperature and just plain ol' never resting on the wall. Don't know where your tri is, but if it's an ocean swim, you'll have the current too. There is also a psychological element; I have some clients that transition very easily to open water swimming, and others that are effected by it much more. The controlled environment of the pool can make you soft! ;)
