Intercostal strain

Hi. I'm new to the forum and just started training for my first sprint tri about three months ago. I strained an intercostal muscle at the bottom of my left rib cage - not even sure how. Has anyone had this kind of strain before? I've read about them on a few rowing forums actually and I guess they take forever to heal. I don't want to stop my training but also do not want a permanent injury. Anyone else had this type of injury and if so, how did you deal with it?

I have not had that type of strain before, but I have had plenty of main body muscle pulls from playing hockey. It will take a while to heal but you can still train on a limited basis, you can go by the old saying "If it don't hurt, your fine", just be carefull when pushing the breathing. Do plenty of streaching before and after your sessions, and I know it sounds harsh but ice does wonders. Just listen to what your body is telling you and if you feel the twinge of the pull comming on, back down from what you are doing and go in a different direction (keep that muscle guessing) :)
I hope this helps.
Spike.

Yes, your comments do help. I've continued to train and the strain is healing slowly. I've also minimized my weight/strength training in that area for now. Thanks Spike.

have minor intercostal strain

I also have an intercostal strain (minor discomfort). I think I got it from lifting a heavy bag while on recent vacation. I am just starting to train for the 2008 NYC Tri and I am wondering if it is OK to start swimming or wait until it is 100% healed? If I wait to long , will it just get weak and thus continue to set me back? Any guidance is greatly appreciated....
