Heart Rate Monitor Lap Question

I have been cycling for years but now I am considering a duathlon. I recently moved with my job and my new town doesn't have a big cycling community but does have a huge tri community, hence the interest in the duathlon. I have a heart rate monitor (Polar s720i) and was wanting some advice on how tri athletes use the lap feature of their monitors. Do you lap when getting off the bike or at the start of the run? What do you do about the transistion? Basically just a lot of newbie questions. Any advice is wanted and needed. Thanks in advance for you time and help.

Thanks,
Keith

Keith,
I assume you mean split times. Lap times are calculated over a fixed distance such as a 100 meter pool. I think it's a matter of personal preference. I personally like to track my split times including my Transition times and if the course is marked, will even split the run miles. This allows me to accurately indicate areas of potential improvement. I use the 720i and like it. It handles these slipts well just by pressing the red button. Good luck.
