I am just getting into triathlons and am looking to buy a road bike. I am competetive and want something that will not hinder my potential but also won't break my bank. I will be entering college and dont have a ton of money. Is it possible for me to buy a decent bike for $1000 or less?... If so, any suggestions as to brands or models?
I recently bough a new Felt F80. Great bike I feel for the money,$999. There were plenty more in the $1300-$1500 range but that was more than I wanted to spend ths time around. Just shop around, test ride and get fitted when you make the purchase. Do your research. Good luck.
Consider this... There's more to your bike purchase than just the bike. Plan on your other gear like helmet & gloves ($50-$200), cycling/Tri wear like shorts & jersey or singlet ($100-$300), and a pedal system & shoes ($150-$500).
I like the Felt F80. My son rides one and swears by it (he regularly kicks my butt on it :)) I started with a Trek 1000 which can be picked up for $600 or so and was very happy with it for a starter bike. It is slightly heavier than the Felt but I had fewer problems (none actually) than my son has had with his Felt. Just a thought...
MOST IMPORTANT: make sure your LBS does a proper fitting on whatever you buy! Good luck!
A bit of advice to add, do lots of test rides on lots of different brands so you know what will fit the best and feel the best, and remember that this bike can be your best friend or your worst enemy depending on fit and distance. If you are interested in IM's then you will be perched on your steed for quite a long time.
Happy shopping.

Reason: spelling
I ride a Fuji 2005 League. The bike cost me less than $400, but I sacrificed the thumb and forefinger gear shifting system as well as weight. My gear shifters are on the downtube. And it's a bit heavier than your typical Carbon Fiber build. But the more I ride it the easier it becomes to switch gears. All in all I spent:
Having the best equipment doesn't necessarily make you the best racer. It takes practice and experience. So don't worry about being a triathlete on a budget like me. :)
