Century

This is my season of firsts; today I did my first century! I was planning on a 5:15, but due to strong headwinds, I finished at 5:45. Then, it was off for a 4 mile run. I was supposed to do 8, but had to be here when my kids get off the bus.

I feel pretty good! My run was more of a run/walk. I ran the first mile in 8:45, and the second at 9:30. Then I walked 1/2 mile, and jogged the rest. It was also hot today. But, good training for the IM. Now it's off to Buffalo Wild Wings to replenish some calories!

Kick butt IM. Congrats on your 100. 17.3 MPH avg, right? You're going to crush IMFL. That course can be windy but likely not. Flat & fast. I'm throwing my $ on a 6 hour bike split for you!!! How's the bum? Are you spending a lot of time in aero? You will in FL. One overpass to cross. It's like 110' elevation. You may never come out of aero save for the aid stations. Do you feel ready? Any questions on what to expect in T1 or T2? Have a Transition packing plan? Contents for all 5 of your transition bags? Maybe it's too early but I'm a planner by nature :) Let me know if I can help.

Are you practicing your Nutrition Plan (NP) on those long rides & runs? Now's the time. I looked at IMFLs web site and couldn't find the on course nutrition info. The only surity is GA Endurance. How's your tollerance to all the nutrition products? GU, Hammer Gel, Clif Shot, etc. Don't forget to woff down a banana or two in training. You'll probably want one or two on the course. Also don't forget de-fizzled coke if you plan to use that on your run. Also, don't forget the magic RKT. 1 in the bento box and one in SN1 :)

By the way... MANY THANKS TO SPIKE. Those Sport Beans are great. I nibbled on them Sunday and enjoyed the h$%^ out of them. I can't see using them as an energy source but I most certainly will use them to break up the monotony of GU taste on my IM. Hopefully I can find them at the Expo before the race. If not, maybe regular beans would do. Thanks again Spike!

How's the swimmimg coming? I'm barely getting in 3000m per week. It's not going to be a pretty race start for Scottie! I just hope the race is wetsuit legal again this year. If not, I may very well sink!

IM, need a females opinion... Wifey's looking for a new saddle. Any suggestions? Thinking about the Terry Liberator. She's up to 40 miles and she's not a happy girl with post ride feeling.

I've yet to get a 100~ ride in this year. Wifeys off to LA next week so my plans are to get one in during the Labor Day weekend. I've yet to do a brick either. I question the benefit to me personally. I do bricks for Oly prep but 70.3-140.6 I only get a few short ones (30-3s for example) in before the race.

Here's your trivia for the day. Do you know where the term "brick" (actually "Brick") comes from?

I was happy with the distance yesterday, but not so much with my time. I literally looked up to the sky a few times and said "Are you kidding me?" The winds were bad, but at least it was good training.

I feel pretty good today, not really sore. My tummy's a little unhappy, but beer and wings'll do that. To answer your question, Scott, I like Serfas saddles. I've had three and never had a problem with them. Terry makes a great saddle as well, and I know women who swear by them. It's rated #1 for women, so I don't think she could go wrong there.

On the ride yesterday, I ate my RKT (savior), sport beans, 3 Clif Bloks, 4 water bottles (thanks again) 1 with water/3 gatorade endurance, 1 powerbar, and 1 GU. Also, I stopped halfway at my inlaws house to pee and my mother-in-law gave me 3 chocolate chip cookies, some grapes and water. Good pit stop. I had enough energy at the end for the run, so I think the plan was pretty good. I know that I'll probably need more because of the swim, but I'm in the ballpark.

With the wind yesterday, I was in aero alot. It actually saves my back, but hurts my neck. I have to take my bike into my LBS and have my beloved mechanic, Doug put a new rear derailer on my bike. She held together for the ride really well, but the crash really hurt it. So, I have an extra Dura Ace on my other bike that I'm going to switch out. I also want to look at some new wheels, I have Mavic Cosmos right now and I want something a little better. Any suggestions that won't kill the bank?

Off to the pool to get in a 3500. First time in a week and a half to swim (besides my race last weekend).

Thanks for the saddle recommendations.

Were you eating on a schedule or at random? Also, were you on a consistant caloric intake plan or taking in calories at random?

On the swim, remember, IMFL is a 2 loop course. You'll exit the water and be able to pick up water before re-entering for lap 2. Here's the trick. Stick a GU into your wetsuit sleve and suck it down as you exit loop 1. Hold off on energy for about 10 minutes into the bike to let your stomach settle.

As for wheels, Florida is flat & fast. The deeper the rim, the more the benefit. I personally can't justify the cost of Zipps but if I had more money than brains, I'd ride 808s. I trashed my Bontragers on a pot hole last year and bought Ksyriums. I'm very happy with the rims so far.
