Race Wheels - Triathlon Week

I am looking at getting a set of race wheels. I am not going to train with them except for when I first get them. I want the advantage race day. However, I would love some ideas as what to get. Should I be looking at spoked race wheels or a carbon aero-wheel set, like the HED3 or Xentis. Any and all help would be appreciated. Also, should I try renting racing wheels?

There are different advantages to different types of wheels. Do you prefer tubular or clincher? What's your price range? For what distance race do you want the wheels?

USC recently did a 40k time trial study and found that "aero wheels" improve a strong riders 40K time trail time by about 40 seconds. If you're a fierce competitor and at or near the front of the pack more expensive wheels might be worth the $. For the vast majority of us, they just look cool on our bikes :)

I've been searching for a set of race tires as well. My current bike (Giant TCR) has 700 X 23 tires. We measured their diameter and inflated, they are more like 25's. I am testing a pair of Mavic Carbone SL's this weekend with a 20cm tire in the front and a "true" 23 cm in the rear. I'll let you know what I find.

Also, my coach swears by the HED three spoke front and full disc in the back, but he cautions that I will get more from proper body position, proper technique and better conditioning than I will from a $1000 set of wheels.

I'd agree with your coach. I also just read an article in this months Triathlon magazine that says... Ready!???

"You get more benefit from an aero helmet than aero wheels"!!! Boy have I been fooled all these years!

Personally however, I'll stick with the aero wheels. I look funny enough in spandex without an icecream cone on my head.

Too funny Scott. Aerowheels look cooler anyhow.
