Big ring

Hey! Where's everyone been hiding? Spike, Scott?

I have a good story...I was riding my bike and passed a guy. Well, about that time, I caught my stride, shifted to the big ring and got her cruising to about 24mph. I stayed there for about 5 miles and then had to turn around. Little did I know, but the guy that I passed (all decked out in his "gear") had been back there trying to keep up with me. He finally did as I had stopped to turn around. He slowed down and said "Jesus you're fast!! How did you get that fast?" I laughed (and thought of Spike on his new bike) and said "Big ring training." As he rode off, I happened to notice him shift up to the big ring!

Good to hear from you IM. Tings are fine in de islands, mon. My wifey has recently begun training again due to a resolution of health issues so we're enjoying our renewed ability to train together. She did her first bike race in years Sunday AM THEN did a 2 mile run race Sun PM! She's my little athlete star & I'm so proud of her. FYI she also did her first 6 mile run ever on Fri.

My training got derailed in the begining of the week. Threw my back COMPLETELY out doing an easy 15 mile bike ride. Was puttering up a hill and BAM! Out she went. Fortunately got back together in time to do a 15 mile run and SCUBA dive Fri and a 26 mile road race and SCUBA dive Sun. Laid off today (Mon) but have a 3AM 16 mile hilly course run on tap for tomorrow.

So... you're an IM AND you're fast, hugh? I love to see the girlies whippin' up on the guys! Shame you won't be in FL in Oct. I'd love to ride with you. But then again, maybe not. I'd hate to be on your list of road kills :)!

Here's a strong and open invitation to bring the family down to de islands for some R&R w/ a litle racing in between. We have cycle races ever other weekend, Tris in Sep (SPR), Nov (OLY), Mar (SPR), Apr (SPR), May (70.3) and June (OLY). Our 70.3 is rated the most difficult half in the world by Tri Mag and is as close to a 3/4 Ironman as you can get with 30 Kona Spots available. Most of all, what a beautiful place to vacation, R&R and race!

Either the May or June races sound good! I would love to come to St. Croix and just put my feet in the sand! I got a little uprooted moving to Indiana from Southern California 4 years ago. I'm still a Gidget at heart!

Glad to hear that you're doing better. Back issues are the pits, believe me, I know. But, you sound like you're back in the saddle, just don't overdo it. It's nice that you and your wife can train together. My husband is a bodybuilder and cardio/cross training just isn't his bag of tea. Oh well. At least he can understand my dedication to my sport.

Hey... us guys don't know the meaning of laying off or taking it easy. Ran a 13 mile loop this AM and got home early enough to bike the same 13 mile loop before heading off to work. Hows that for stinkin' back recovery :)

Start planning your vacation for the 1st Sunday in May 2007. You won't regret the trip, I promise!

I'll have to put in for vacation this week! Sun, beach, margaritas, half IM, hmmmmm.. Who could ask for more? :)

I heard that it's a pretty hilly course, though. More big ring training!

No need for the big ring here! Just do those 1 mile 18% grade hill climbs and you'll be fine :)

No worries... It's not as tough as I make it sound. In reality about half the athletes walk "The Beast". It takes about 15 minutes to walk. It takes me 8-9 minutes to ride up. The rest of the course is not bad with only about 6 other short 8-18% climbs. A middle of the packer can do the bike in 3:15.

The run is a little tough due to the heat, hills & humidity. No major climbs but lots of rollers.

Great on course support though and the scenery is the bomb. Check out the attached pic. Look behind me to the palms & the water. A lot of the course is very tropical and is eye candy even when you're in pain :)

Ok, Scott

I've talked to my hubby and he's all for going to St. Croix. So, I'm planning on the St. Croix race next year. I've decided to do two 70.3's next year, St. Croix in May and Muncie, IN in July. By the way, the Muncie half is the oldest half IM.

Cool!!! I'm excited! I hope you do indeed join us. Great news! You have a local training partner! Still have my email address so you can make contact before you come? If not, just navigate to wifey's web site and you can get me from there (thanks to you I did update the pics, by-the-way). Also, contact me during all your planning phases so I can give you some direction that will save you $ and make your stay more pleasant.

So, how's IM training coming? Still passing the boys? What's your weekly workouts looking like now?

Sounds good! I'm really looking forward to it and this gives me time to save for the trip.

IM training is going well. I'm on a recovery week, and don't know what to do with my extra time! But, overall, I'm getting stronger and faster. So, training is going well, thanks for asking. You're doing the GFT this year in October, aren't you? How's your back?

Hi guys! sorry to be on the down low for so long, having issues with computer time vs training time vs everything else time. Went on a 18 miler with my future son in law on Saturday, right at the turn around he bonked hard core and spent the next 20 min. on his back in the ditch sucking wind and Gatorade. He vowed that he would race with me next year if I diddn't kill him in training this year, however he spanks my butt in the pool so I quess we are even. Heather, way to kick it up out there, it's a blast to dust someone off, what's also a good time is when someone passes you and you won't let them go and after about a mile they look back to see how far ahead of you they are and your on their tail with a smile on your face. I see Scott is pushing "The Beast" again, this is one race that I will do someday (money permitting) and I know my wife want's to do the beach while I do the Beast. My first race of the season is on Sunday and I'm stoked, the only problem is the water as of yesterday was 67 degrees (Burrrrrrrr!!!!!!) oh well I guess we all can't swim in the tropics.
I'll post times of my race next week.
Happy training.
Spike.

Welcome back Spike! Godd to see you again. Yes, the beast is calling. You guys are making me TOTALLY jealous with your training. I'll use this thread to tell you a quick story.

My wife has suffered for years with excercise enduced migraines. She actually suffered a palsy like episode a few years back (looked like a stroke!). So for the last few years she hasn't excercised much at all. Numerous doctors looked at her but couldn't find a solution.

About 3 weeks ago as an experiment, she tried Excedrin Migraine before a short run. NO HEADACHE! If she takes two EMs before her workouts she's pain free. Incredible! That's the good news.

Now the sad news... She's turned into a workout freak! And guess who gets to be her workout partner. Do I need to say what that's doing to my IM training? Fact is, I wouldn't trade it for the world :)

Heather, sorry I missed your question above. Back's fine, life's beautiful!
