Hard to unclip

I just got a new bike and I find that I am having a real hard time unclipping from the pedals. Is there a way to adjust the tension on the pedals?

What type of clips & cleats? Most do indeed have an adjustment. Often the problem is lubrication. Most mfgs recommend dry lube but I use good old WD40 on my Speedplay cleats. If yo do lube, do so the day before the ride, wipe off the excess, then wipe clean just before the ride to remove the excess. Good luck!

the pedals are shimano PD-M505 SPD. The right one is really hard to get out. The adjustment, is all I need to do is loosen a screw?

Yep just loosen it up about 1/4 turn then try to clip out, do fine adjustments until it works the way you want it to. I also would check to see if there is something in the way of the mechanism, I use the Look system and sometimes a small rock will lodge in the rear of the pedel and won't allow me to clip in.
Good luck.
Spike.

Thanks for the help. I loosened them just a little. I stayed in just fine, but was able to get out a lot easier. I am new at this and hope to do my first sprint later this summer.
