Advice

I am wanting to start competing in some sprint triathlons. The running and the swimming I know enough about. But the bike is the problem. No clue what so ever. What are some reccomedations on a bike. I am not wanting to spend a whole lot on one until I know for sure that triathlons are for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Could someone just point me in the right direction.

Hi Dave, I have several tips and advice for you, first of all figure out how much you are willing to spend and see if there are any bikes out there you like for that price range. Second, go to a bike shop that sells that bike and try it on like a pair of pants or shoes (you will know fairly quickly if it dosen't fit) the people at the shop will know how to make it better or give you advice as to where to go from there. If you like it and it fits, look for one on E-bay or find a used one for lots cheaper than new. I suggest a road bike, a tri specific bike is not only set up for tri's but the price is steap. A road bike is the best for training and competing with little or no equipment changing. Shoes are another story, just like the bike they need to fit and be comfortable, the pedel systems out there are amazing, these too are there for you to fit and choose from. If you get a road bike that has regular pedals you can train and compete in your running shoes to see if you like it, if you do then you can do the shoe and pedal route.
I hope this helps.
Good luck and happy training.
Spike.

Dave - your road bike will be on of the most significant investment in the sport of triahtlon (along with the race registration fees). You can start low and upgrade later. Your budget will determine weather you get aluminum or carbon fiber, although you can luck out with carb fiber from ebay or your local classifieds. As Spike said, fit it VERY important. Make sure that the bike shop you go to, can also do the fitting. If you buy from them, you should not pay for the fitting (it can go as high as $100 just for the fitting). If you buy it used, make sure you get your bike professionaly fitted. Shoes and pedas are also important (speedplay, looks, shimano etc.). A lot of people ride looks but speedplay are great too because they give the leg more room for movement (I swear by mine). Aside from the basics, you will get all the cycling attire (arm warmers, leg warmers, knee warmers), the helmet, the gloves, the water bottles, pumps, tires (I wouldn't worry about tires at this point other than to buy some all around durable tires).

I don't if this has been helpful or more overwhelming. We have quite a few cycling geaks here to also make suggestions.

One last thing: I ride a carb fiber and my close friend rides aluminum and she kicks my butt often. So..it is the rider and not the bike. With that..I LOVE my bike and do not regret spending serious $$$ for it.
