Hey Julian
Honestly, don't change much from what you eat everyday. My personal fav is a peanut butter and apple sandwhich on 12 grain (don't knock it until you've tried it.) It keeps me going. It also depends on how long you eat before the race starts. Your problem may be that you are changing your diet on race day from normal days. Your body may reject this.

Try different things out on days that you are going to do a serious training. Try to simulate race conditions(times) after eating. It is only trial and error. Everyone is different. What I eat may not work for you.
Concern yourself with what you are eating the night before

You should check out the "Pre race preparation" article that is posted on the articles section of Triweek. It gives you a good guide for amount of food / carbs for each hour prior to race and some other good tips for race day.

Hi Julian

Look out for 220 Triathlon Magazine (as your in England) next month (May). I have a feature article explaining what you are looking for.

Many kind regards

I agree with the above. Just stick to whatever you have been eating during your training. I know that a bagel with peanut butter gives me tons of energy as do powerbars/cliffbars. Make sure you don't overdo it before your race. Racing on an upset stomach is the worst (I'm sure you know this).

Also be sure you get your hydration in. A day or two before an intense workout I will drink about a gallon (75% sports drink, 25% water) of liquid. But make sure you test this out and do what works for you.

Great advise. This is the most important thing.

Butterflies typically keep the hunger bug away. Before Sprints, I typically take my calories in the form of liquid. I use Carbo-Pro mixed with Grape Gatorade. YUM!

Olys and greater I eat Cream of Wheat. It's easy to digest, loaded with carbs and doesn't stop me up.

I have been eating a high fat (8%)organic yogurt with a glass of goji closer to the start of a sprint. I seem to have energy for the entire race.
