Calf / Shin Pain - Help!

Don't suppose anyone has experienced anything similar to this? - I am experiencing pain in my left lower leg; which seems to be in multiple places! :( I first noticed a strain in my calf (middle to top of it) whilst doing interval running, which disappeared until my next session, which reappeared when i stopped and cooled down (and hurt alot!). Since then I have only run once (lighter and shorter session than usual) which seemed to make things worse so now I've stopped running (but kept up biking / swimming which does not seem to affect it) however I have also noticed pain in my lower shin and on the outside of the leg as well eg during walking, or if I try to run / jog. I plan to see a physio this week but just wanted to see if anyone has expereinced anything similar, and what they did about it... Have to say I and am really worried about having to stop training from running altogether and lose all my results from training so far :(

Annie, you are doing the right thing by going to the doc, It sounds like multiple things to me, the surface you are running on is too hard or your shoes are worn in the wrong place (due to bad form, my biggest problem) also stretch before and after each workout. I also use the old standby, ice and ibuprofin with a hint of linament, my favorites are Tiger Balm Ultra and Theragesic. Good luck and I hope this helps, keep us posted.
Spike.

Thanks Spike :) Thinking it could possibly be my style of running... The long distance running hasn't caused me grief in the past but think maybe the length of my stride could have pulled something during interval training / sprints... have booked in with the physio tomorrow so will wait and see... fingers crossed!

Hi Spike,
Just an update of how things went with the physio - looks as though I've done some damage to my calf (to one of the deep inner muscles) - which is common with middle or sprint distance runners - would've been caused by a number of contributing factors but mainly due to my interval training... a case of too much too soon and the muscle not being able to adapt quickly enough to the strain - aaargh - frustration! So no running for around 3 weeks (although can walk, bike & swim) and I've got to do some physio to re-strengthen it... so on the bright side I guess I can focus on my swimming and riding for a while... change or pace can be good!

Well it's good to know what's wrong so you can fix it. Walking is one of the best ways I rehab a leg injury, it also does my Beagle a world of good to get out of the house. Change is good, but try not to hurt yourself to get there :)
Thanks for the update, also you could try a supplement I read about on this site called Endurox R4, I am going to give it a try myself, who knows it just might work.
Later.
Spike.
