For longer rides/runs, I've been using Accelerade ... I bought into the concept to try the 4:1 carb to protein mix. That's been working OK (at least better than Gatorade). Anyway I've more recently, I've been using PowerBar Endurance. It's not so sweet and actually tastes pretty good, at least it tastes OK when you're working out. So, what do you drink?
I tried accelerade, but I didn't like the texture... I've come back to go old Cytomax. It tastes good and seems to work. I drank gatorade at Wildflower and it upset my stomach.
I agree with the comment about the texture of Accelerade. It does take some getting used to. I forced myself to use it because it was one of the few drinks that included protein. I know a few people who use Cytomax, I'll give a try.
I've also heard several people say good things about Hammer products. Anyone, used it?
I like water. I put a squeeze of lemon juice in it to replace electroyltes, then add a tiny bit of dextrose for the sugars.
It's cheaper & quicker.
Also, gatorade makes me feel like I'm going to puke. I don't know how anyone can drink that crap on a long ride/run. I don't want fruity Kool-Aide crap bouncing around in my stomach. Simple is best.
On Another note, the guy I train with LOVES Gatorade. Makes him feel great.
Try them all and find out what is best. Your body will tell you. Trust me!
Never tried Accelerade, but I would like to. Carbs/Protein sounds great.
I like sports drinks as much as the next guy, but found a great substitute in ordinairy apple juice, added with mineral water. All the supplements you need + no excessive 'sweat' taste... (most power drink are so 'sweat' they become heavy on the stomach)
A new (state of the art?) technology has arrived that you all need to at least try out, especially those who like water for hydration. Wearing lifewave patches will enable you to easily burn more fat as a substitute for carbs. You will find that not only will your energy flow be high and steady, but that your trainning will quickly go to a new level. Check them out [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
Individual preference is always a key issue, but to take this discussion a little beyond the names of products, it's the type of carbohydrate that is within each drink that is the issue.
Gatorade is entirely fructose. Even though fructose is a simple sugar, it must pass through the stomach before heading to the liver where is is then converted to glucose and finally released into the blood stream. This is fine is you don't need the energy very quickly or you are not working at a very high intensity (i.e.: >75% VO2max). And as was mentioned, fructose has a tendency to give us that upset stomach feeling.
Drinks based on maltodextrin are the ones that hold the most promise. Maltodextrin has been shown to quickly pass through the stomach to be rapidly absorbed in the small intenstines as glucose, even though it is a complex carbohyrate. You'll notice that some/most maltodextrin based drinks also have fructose or dextrose or maltose....; this is because the body has different transport mechanisms for different sugars. Combining sugars can allow the body to bring in carbohydrate at rates of up to 1.8g carbs/min (as opposed to 1g carbs/min with just glucose or maltodextrin alone).
Practical scenario: use something that you can mix yourself to control the concentration (smaller people/low intensity training ~30-40g/carbs/hr - larger people/higher intensity training ~50-70g/carb/hr or more)...and don't forget some sea salt! (GU2O and PowerBar Endurance do the best with sodium content....last I checked).

Fructose follows a different biochemical pathway than the other simple sugars - takes twice as long - which may be cause of gastrointestinal discomfort, or the solution may be too concentrated (should be 4-8g carbohydrate/10omL)

ANybody try the All Sport Zero? It is like regular All sport/Gatorade, but 0 calories. It is pretty good. I compared the labels and it is the same as regular All Sport

Are you reasoning for drinking something with 0 calories? or do you (eg) have one bottle of All Sport Zero with another bottle that has calories or combine All Sport Zero with gels/food/etc.?

Great nutrition thread. I say mix it up. At mile 90 everything tastes like crap - especially after it's been in the sun for 4 hours. I start with water and Spiz (spiz.net) then switch to Gatorade. I load carbo saches with Carbo Pro and mix to caloric need.
I like tropical punch cytomax. Goes down easy, just need to figure out how to keep it cold for 1/2's and up. I throw in a couple of endurolytes every hour along with some hammer gels (choclate and rasberry seem to be my favorite). My first half I took down a thanksgiving dinner of bars and drinks. Ended up having clog my chest, thickening my spit to the point where I had a hardtime breathing and taking a huge dump at mile nine. I love triathlon
May I introduce you to another product on the market? We have two actually, one for rehydration and one for energy/antioxidant performance.
The hydration drink is [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] . I've found great benefits during and after workouts and strenous activities. My kids love it, especially after riding bikes all afternoon in the hot sun. They aren't as cranky afterwards.
We have a new energy drink out with an ORAC value of 5840. No that's not a miss print. Again I love it, it's a healthy alternative to Red Bull, Rockstar, Amp, etc. Plus I feel confident in giving this to my kids. The ingredients are common, trusted, and researched. It has 10 times less calories and 8 different vitamins, 7 of which are over 100% of the RDA in an 8 oz. serving. See my [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for more information. Please, feel free to contact me about these great products.
